If MeriEducation is my baby, then I suppose I am its mother. At times, I look back at my life before MeriEducation and characterize it as calculated professional wandering. To appease my parents, I subscribed to dreams of becoming a doctor, but alas I couldn't fathom wearing a white coat all day because my favorite color is black. Then, after unabashedly finding cinematic value in Legally Blonde, I found interest in law and changed my major to Political Science but never did go blonde. I did intern for a few politicos, and then realized that barrister life was not a life for me. During my fourth year of college, I taught myself how to sew, was featured in a few national magazines for a non-profit I started called Clothing 4 Charity (C4C), and started an eponymous clothing line called Joan Nguyen Clothing. In 2007, I had to think like a big kid, and, at 21, I shut down my clothing line and went full force with MeriEducation.
Why do you love Merieducation?
It's odd to describe it this way, but I'm going to do so because there's really no other way. When I am at MeriEducation, I get that same feeling I did when I was a little girl when I would play house. When you're playing house as a little girl, you get to live out these fantastical moments prematurely. You get to bake, when you're too young to know 350 degrees from 475 degrees. You get to make "pancakes," when you're too short to even turn on the stove. You get to live out this fantasy, and it is incredibly exciting. With MeriEducation, I feel as though I get to live out a fantasy, except it's real. I can think of quirky lessons for test prep curriculum, design a tutoring center that is different than any other, develop a company culture that is defined by positivity and personality. Because it's all real, the impact is real. The people are real, the smiles are real, and the results are real. MeriEducation is my imagination station with real-life application. It is where I watch students evolve, with a ripple effect so strong that leads to my own evolution as a human being and agent of change.
